HHI
We spent some time on Hilton Head Island last month. I think it's the first time we'd been back in about 3 or 4 years. As usual, I really liked it. I think we all did.
The Spanish moss sets the tone, the wide beach provides a playground, and the ocean always makes me think. (But I'm keeping this post light, so I won't go there this time!)
We went to several old faithfuls -- San Miguel's, Giuseppi's, Pirate's Cove (of course, which isn't really Pirate's Cove -- it's Pirate's Island, but we always called it the wrong name), and the RTJ golf course. We were crushed, however, that the Cracker Barrel closed -- we began the BCB tradition (Big Country Breakfast -- what we called it!) on HHI many years ago, but we'll have to start a new breakfast tradition now that the Cracker Barrel closed.
As usual, I couldn't resist looking at houses. If I ever get the chance to write or speak for a living, I've always imagined doing so in or from that setting.
Lindsay and Joe joined us this time, and we had such a nice time with them. (Glad you guys could take the time off!)
They introduced us to a few new places that will become old faithfuls now -- Old Fort Pub and Hudson's.
I like Hilton Head because there's more depth there than I've been able to uncover. The Gullah history remains a mystery to me. The intracoastal waterway remains unexplored. Daufuskie seems interesting, but I've never been. I think I'd like to read Pat Conroy's 1972 book about Daufuskie before I take my next trip down.
