Retirement Announcement (well, kinda more just a New Year's Resolution)
I'm 17 days out from ACL reconstruction #3. Three is enough for any one person. So at age 46, I think it's time to announce my retirement from certain competitive sports that involve contact or jump stops or planting or turning. So yes, I guess you could say that I'm giving up the dream. It is indeed a sad day.
So my New Year's resolution is simple: avoid a 4th ACL reconstruction, if at all possible. To accomplish this resolution, I plan to stay on the DL (disabled list) for the following sports: football, soccer, basketball, tennis, racquetball, handball, volleyball, squash, lacrosse, field hockey, skiing (of any sort -- water or snow), snowboarding, skateboarding, hockey, and anything else that remotely resembles any of the foregoing activities.
Sports left on the possible list this year (after say April) include golf, running, biking, swiming, sailing, billiards, chess, hot air ballooning, board games, and a handful of others.
A sport on the maybe list is baseball -- but only to play catch and coach.
It might be a slight stretch to put myself in the category or even the generation of Brett Favre. But I am one of those who clearly understands why Brett can't easily lay it down. So I reserve the right now to reconsider just about anything.
But maybe this is the turning point -- where I realize that good competitive golf can be just as exciting as hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
All this is, of course, with tongue in cheek!
