Thanksgiving 2019
This morning
During this week of Thanksgiving
The eastern horizon was ablaze
And the sky
Oh, the sky
What a magnificent sky
The deep azure blue
Like a lapis lazuli
Prelude to a beautiful symphony
Of sights and sounds
Such wonderful sights and sounds
All of this was here
Before the first hunter
The first gatherer
Arrived
On the gifted earth
To find that
Every thing needed
Or desired
For sustenance
Was derived
From something or someone
They could not see
Just like we
Awake each day to
A global economy
Water and light
Food and delight
Heat in the night
Shade for relief
Plants and animals
And birds that can fly
While the seas are alive
With mysterious life
Seasons and climates
In a temperate
Precarious balance
This world just so far
From one blazing hot star
Only one (we need) of one
Followed by twenty-four
Immeasurable zeros
Maybe even infinite
All powered by fuel
We did not source
We don't know
Much at all, really
Life, we are alive
Breath, we derive
From air just right
For us
In a most unlikely
Seemingly at first
Inhospitable
Universe
In which we find
Every single time
We discover
Some new 'wow'
We emerge from
The wardrobe, as it were,
Into fresh wonder
Awestruck marvel
This morning
During this week of Thanksgiving
The eastern horizon was ablaze
And the sky
Oh, the sky
For the magnificent sky
I'm so grateful,
Our Father
