That Was Cool
Last night, I had the opportunity -- for the first time, I think -- to serve communion to one of my family members. I was serving the wine: "this is the blood of Christ, the cup of salvation, shed for your sins."
Jonathan happened to be home from the Marines. When I saw him in line, I realized that this opportunity had presented itself unscripted. Despite the fact that I almost choked up when I realized the opportunity (Jonathan later said, "ah, Dad, that's because your a sap" with which I had to laugh and agree), I was so pleased (no, honored really) to be the communicant of God's grace to my own son.
Months ago, Erin once said (and I chronicled this in another post) that the Eucharist is open to all who simply want to follow Christ. I'm so glad it is -- for me, a broken sap of a 50-year old who has failed often and who feels as insecure and lonely as a lot of other people; and for my son, a young strapping Marine, a 22-year old with strength and vitality and tons of temptations, I'm sure. We all come to Christ - just as we are, not who we should be, because none of us are who we should be.
Thank you, Father, for the chance to share your Son's body and blood with my own son.
