Caregiver
You welcomed me into this world
Through your pain and with your love
Embraced me as I was
Unable to move and helpless
Weary myself from the push, struggle
Now I see you at 84,
Lying there in the dark,
Grimacing
And amber and green LED lights
Illuminate the night
Discomfort, we can see,
As you raise the washcloth to cover your face
So you can breathe more forcefully
as with LaMaze
I pray for Jesus to send his angels
To relieve your pain and show mercy
You are my Mary
You are His, too
What I've seen today is good
Yes, painful, but good
To see the five bearing the burden of one
As it crushes on our hearts
The sweet relief that we desire
Comes not from oxycodone
But from the slowed breathing
That accompanies the release of pain
That becomes peace
