In the End
Yesterday, about 11 am,
As I was packing up my things
To go downtown for a board meeting,
I glanced at an email on my outlook account,
And saw the subject stated like this --
Final Order Entered.
I want to describe how I felt,
To preserve it for memory,
Without using a cliche
Like my heart sank
Or my throat closed
Or I felt like excrement.
All of those are true, of course,
Each and every one of them
But mostly I want to say it differently
So here's my attempt to put it to pen
That surprisingly, it really did simply
Feel like the end.
As I backed out the car
Using my rear view mirror
Time slipped into reflection
On what I might could have done
I wish I could understand
Why all this is part of the plan.
Forward-looking now,
A right, a right, a left, a right
And the Trinity sign at the corner
Of Dolley Madison and Buchanan
Read for the hour
Let there be peace.
In the end,
The Final Order
Is yet to be revealed
